Morgan Freeman Will Narrate New Docuseries About Infamous Prison Escapes

Everyone remembers Morgan Freeman's character in The Shawshank Redemption.

He played Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding, a prison contraband smuggler who befriends the protagonist Andy (portrayed by Tim Robbins). He witnessed one of the best cinematic and drawn out prison escapes and we're all thankful for it.

Now Freeman is lending his voice to a similar project that will look at all the best real-world jail breaks.

Deadline reports the docuseries with The History Channel is being called Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman and the first season will have six one-hour episodes to start with.

The Academy Award-winner said in a statement: "I've been inside the minds of prisoners in my acting career, and I'm looking forward to stepping inside the most notorious prisons in the world, like Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Rikers Island and Leavenworth.

"Audiences will feel like they're making the escapes themselves as I walk them into a virtual world and through the greatest escapes in history."

Each episode will go into depth about how each prison escape happened, who was involved and whether they were ever caught.

There will be 'dramatic re-creations' and 'cutting-edge visual effects' to help piece every moment together; from how they formed their plan to how they carried it out.

Eli Lehrer, EVP and General Manager for The History Channel reckons Morgan will be able to make audiences feel like they are there with the inmates as they make their daring escapes.

"The History channel is honoured to partner with Morgan and his production team, Revelations Entertainment, to deliver context and backstory to some of history's infamous prison escapes," he said. "Morgan's gravitas will help ground this series and drive the drama in a way no other face or voice can."

There's no indication on when we can see Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman debut on the telly so we'll have to wait and see when more information is released.
