Their cover of a Tame Impala song is highly tipped to beat out the likes of Justin Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo for the top spot.

The Wiggles might be iconic children's entertainers, however they could soon be about to take out one massive award in the music industry.

As we approach Australia Day, Triple J's legendary Hottest 100 countdown will look back at everyone's favourite songs of 2021 and crown one artist or group as the people's champions.

At the moment, it looks like The Wiggles could win.

Online aggregator 100 Warm Tunas has been watching the voting play out over the past few weeks and has been pretty spot on with its previous predictions.

It has The Wiggles' cover of Tame Impala's 'Elephant' as number one on their list.

The Like A Version cover was recorded back in March last year and everyone was blown away hearing the band bust out something that wasn't strictly their usual 'Hot Potato' schtick.

It wasn't a total cover as The Wiggles got to inject lines from 'Fruit Salad' to make it more in line with their vibe, but it still struck a massive chord with listeners.

Blue Wiggle Anthony Field told The Age that it would blow their mind if they won the Hottest 100.

"It's an absolute spin-out. It's not something we ever thought would happen. But we really did do the song out of love," he said.

Lachy Gillespie added: "It's bizarre, it's just been this amazingly popular thing. In the end, it's been a special experience for all of us."

He revealed that it was difficult to work out their plan for the song because it was fairly unique.

"It seemed quite straightforward. But then we actually went to rehearse it, and the phrasing and the timing of it - we were kind of blown away, he is an incredible musician," he said of Kevin Parker, who is the man behind Tame Impala.

"We had a really tricky time. With some of the bars I think we counted to, like, 11, so we knew when to come in on that bass riff.

"It was a great exercise because most of our songs are so simple, just in 4/4 time. Since then, I've listened to a lot of [Tame Impala's] music, and there are some great songs."

If they do win the title next week, not only will they beat out megastars like Justin Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo but they will also be the first ever Like A Version to take out the top spot.
