Matt Lucas announces he's quitting Great British Bake Off

Matt Lucas has quit Great British Bake Off, saying he can no longer carry on doing the show alongside his other projects.

The host shared a sweet statement announcing his decision, thanking his co-presenter Noel Fielding - who he affectionally referred to as 'Noelipops' - as well judges, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and the production team and broadcaster Channel 4.

Sharing his statement on social media, the comedian said: "Farewell Bake Off! It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers.

"But it's become clear to me that I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

"So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.

"I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.

"I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can't wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!"

The Great British Bake Off's official Twitter account also shared a screen grab of Lucas’ post.

They wrote: “We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need. We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It's been a pleasure - thanks Matt.”

Lucas has been fronting the show for the last three series alongside fellow host and comedian Fielding, after previous host Sandi Toksvig stepped down.

Fans of the show have responded to the news, expressing their disappointment at his departure.

One wrote: “This makes me really sad! You were a joy to watch Matt! Best of luck!

Someone else said: "So sorry to see Matt go. I have loved him on Bake off. He and Noel were great together. I do hope Noel is staying on."

While a third commented: “I’m gonna miss Matt! He was awesome! Thank you for the wonderful seasons, Matt!”

It's still unclear who will replace Lucas but fans have already thrown some names into the hat on social media.

One person demanded Richard Ayoade, while another suggested that Stacey Solomon would make the ideal host. And someone else made the slightly off-the-wall decision to put forward Matt Hancock as a host.
