Billie Eilish's Bad Guy Features A Really Unusual Sample

Billie Eilish's Bad Guy Features A Really Unusual Sample

Plenty of pop songs have been built around unusual sounds, but Billie Eilish's award-winning hit 'Bad Guy' might just take the prize for the strangest sample of all - it contains the sound of an Australian pedestrian crossing. Does this sound familiar?

The 18-year-old was in Sydney where she heard the noise emitting from an Aussie pedestrian crossing and was so pleased with the sound she recorded it on a voicenote on her phone.

She told Rolling Stone: "My mum and I went for a walk in Sydney. We were like across the street from the hotel and the crosswalk is this little - you press it and it's like 'doop, doop'. And I was like, 'That's hard!' That's the sound that it makes when you have to wait."

Her brother Finneas O'Connell then cut it up, altered the pitch and sped it up before it made its way into the very catchy chorus of 'Bad Guy'. Weird, eh?

What makes the whole thing even better is the reaction from Eilish and O'Connell's dad.

Finneas told Rolling Stone: "The hilarious part about all this is we were just in Australia in May and my dad goes, 'Have you heard these crosswalks?'

"And I was like, 'Yeah, it's the chorus in 'Bad Guy'.' And he goes, 'What?' I was like, 'Yeah... never mind man.'"

As you might already know, Billie Eilish had a very successful night at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, picking up Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Naturally, Aussies are delighted that their pedestrian crossings have won an award (sort of...).

Taking to social media, one person wrote: "'Bad Guy' topping hottest 100 is actually an Australian song topping hottest 100 considering the chorus is Billie Eilish literally sampling the Sydney pedestrian crossing green light noise."

A second person joked: "When the biggest thing the city of Sydney has given to music in quite some time is a pedestrian crossing beep sample on a Billie Eilish song."
