American rapper Lil Nas X has revealed that coming out as gay strengthened his relationship with his dad.

The man behind 2019 hit song "Old Town Road" has opened up on his relationship with his mother and father since coming out. He said that while it was a "shock" for his dad, the pair "have become closer".

"Especially now because I don't have anything to hide" he continued. But Lil Nas X says he's not quite ready to bring a guy round to meet his father just yet, because "it's still the beginning phase".

Sadly, Lil Nas X doesn't have quite as strong a relationship with his mum as she suffers with addiction. He said: "We don't have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better - things didn't quite work out."

Despite this, X says "there's still love".

The rapper came out as gay in June last year via Twitter. He pointed his fans in the direction of his song C7osure, where he'd left clues about his sexuality, followed by a rainbow emoji.

In a later tweet, Lil Nas said how he thought he had made his sexuality obvious with an image of his album artwork, showing a rainbow on a skyscraper.

He is the only artist ever to come out as gay whilst holding the number one spot in the charts.

Like his mother, Lil Nas X told his own tale of drug problems. Speaking to Variety, he described his difficulty in dealing with the loss of his grandmother, who he says "was the first person close to me who died. It was devastating".

As well as the death of his grandmother, Nas was also hurt by the loss of fellow artists Juice Wrld, XXXTentacion and Nipsey Hussle. To help him cope, X turned to weed and admitted "smoking heavily".

Lil Nas X was speaking ahead of this year's Grammys which take place this Sunday. Nas is up for six awards, including song of the year, for Old Town Road - the record holder for consecutive weeks at US number one. His album, 7, is also up for album of the year.
