Lana Del Rey Criticised For Wearing A Mesh Face Mask To Meet Fans

That mask isn't going to stop the spread of anything

Lana Del Rey has come in for criticism - and quite a bit of ridicule - after sporting a shiny mesh mask to greet fans at a poetry reading and book signing event in Los Angeles this Friday.

So, you don't need to be a world-leading viral epidemiologist to know by now that you should be wearing a mask when meeting others to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Equally, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that if that mask is completely full of holes, you might as well not bother wearing it at all.

To reiterate, that's not an excuse not to wear one, you should just wear a proper one.

However, the 35-year-old musician - whose real name is Elizabeth Grant - posed with fans and signed copies of her new book, entitled Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass, while wearing the ridiculous - and ultimately useless - garment.

After she shared some pictures and video of herself at the event, people were pretty quick to point out her mistake, and to express their anger at Del Rey's refusal to wear something over her mouth and nose that complies with the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control guidelines aimed at keeping people safe from Covid-19.

One comment, which received more than 38,000 likes, said: "YOU MAKE IT SO HARD TO STAN PLEASEE WEAR A PROPER MASK."

Another person wrote: "Lana please wear a real mask i'm begging you to be safe."

However, not even her disregard for mask-wearing guidelines could stop the fans turning out to try to meet their favourite artist.

One person tweeted: "YES lana del rey is wearing a mesh mask and YES i am still ubering 30 minutes to attempt to meet her."

So, according to the best science we've got at the minute, masks should be made of high-thread cotton and have a protective layer.

Crucially, it's important they don't have big holes in to stop the spread of potentially contagious droplets.

Del Rey hasn't responded to any of the criticism of her mesh-mask, and the video remains active on her Instagram page.

However, she has since shared a picture of herself wearing an animal print mask, much to the delight of some of her fans.

One said: "Yes lana. That's a proper and REAL mask...wear these instead of that mesh s*** u [sic] wore."

Simple, but to the point.
