After several years of silence, Lorde has revealed new music is on the way.

The New Zealand singer has used lockdown to get her creative juices flowing and she reckons her fans will absolutely be buzzing when they hear her new material.

In an email to her loyal followers, the 23-year-old, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, said it took her a while to get back into writing and creating music after the death of her beloved dog Pearl. But, after giving herself time to heal, she has been able to find the words to express herself.

"I started going back to the studio again in December, just for something to do, and to my surprise, good things came out. Happy, playful things," she wrote.

"I know now how excited I am to get back out there. I want to eat summer foods in beautiful countries-ice cream and tomatoes and anchovies. I want to use my gift, and watch it grow. Who knows when it'll be safe to do those things, but I'm craving them, and I wanted you to know."

Lorde has teamed up with producer Jack Antonoff, who worked on her critically acclaimed Melodrama album, for the third record.

"It flowed. A thing started to take shape. And then, of course, the world shut down. We're still working away-Jack and I FaceTimed for over an hour this morning going over everything. But it'll take a while longer," she said.

Following the release of that album, Lorde realised that she could sometimes get crippled with stage performance anxiety and questioned whether she would ever tour again.

While that question hangs in the air, she warned her followers to remain patient for the new music.

"I want nothing more than to feed you treats, pop perfect morsels straight into your little mouths," she said in her message to fans.

"But as I get older I realise there's something to be said for the pleasant feeling of waiting for something of quality to become available to you.

"You could have something of lesser quality much faster, but as the high quality thing comes into fruition, a warm feeling grows inside you. Do you know what I mean?"

We do, Lorde. We do. At least we know that the third album is definitely in the works and it's on the way...eventually.

"The work is so f***ing good, my friends. I am truly jazzed for you to hear it," she said.
