An aeroplane carrying pop star Miley Cyrus was forced to make an emergency landing after being struck by lightning.

The singer moved quickly to reassure fans that she was OK, but it must have been a pretty scary experience for her.

Cyrus shared a video from on board the flight that showed passengers gasping in awe at the lightning outside the plane, which was heading towards Paraguay as part of her South American tour.

Miley was heading off to South America with her friends and family, as well as her road crew and band, when the plane was struck.

Miley quickly assured fans she was OK.

Afterwards, she shared an update, writing: "To my fans and everyone worried after hearing about my flight to Asunción.

"Our plane was caught in a major unexpected storm and struck by lightning.

"My crew, band , friends and family who were all traveling with me are safe after an emergency landing.

"We were unfortunately unable to fly into Paraguay. I LOVE YOU."

The 'Wrecking Ball' singer is currently on a tour of South America, and had just played in the Colombian capital city of Bogotá before heading on to Paraguay.

Along the way, she's made performances at Lollapalooza Argentina and Lollapalooza Chile, and is expected to continue on to Brazil before the tour ends in April.

Fans were understandably glad to see that she was OK, despite presumably getting a bit of a scare.

One gushed: "WE LOVE YOU MILEY IM SO HAPPY THAT EVERYONE IS OKAY."

Another said: "THANK GOD YOU ALL ARE SAFE."

The strike left a mark on the aeroplane.

Miley recently made the news when she seemed to take aim at the nominations for the Grammy Awards.

Her album Plastic Hearts and single Midnight Sky could reasonably have been expected to get the nod for a nomination, but she was snubbed.

After that, she shared a picture on Twitter that showed a number of artists who have never won a competitive Grammy.

The 29-year-old captioned her post: "In good company".

It showed artists such as Diana Ross, Sia, Nas, Bjork, and The Beach Boys, all of whom never took home a gramophone shaped gong.

Still, Miley can take solace in the fact that she did get a nomination for a credit on Lil Nas X's album Montero, which could win album of the year at the April awards ceremony.

Cyrus received her one and only solo nomination in 2015 for her album Bangerz, but she lost out in the best pop vocal category to Sam Smith.
