Traumatic upbringing of Kendrick Lamar following horrific experience aged five

This year's Super Bowl halftime headliner had a seriously tough upbringing

It wasn't easy growing up as Kendrick Lamar.

The Super Bowl LIX headliner, who will grace the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday (9 February), had a particularly tough childhood.

He was born Kendrick Lamar Duckworth in Compton, California, a city renowned for pioneering music, but also being home to gang violence.

Surrounded by poverty and crime, the then-five-year-old witnessed his first murder.

"It was outside my apartment unit," he told NPR.

"A guy was out there serving his narcotics and somebody rolled up with a shotgun and blew his chest out."

"Admittedly, it done something to me right then and there," Kendrick said in 2015.

"It let me know that this is not only something that I'm looking at, but it's something that maybe I have to get used to — you dig what I'm saying?"

His parents, originally from Chicago, moved to Compton when they were teenagers because of the father Kenneth 'Kenny' Duckworth's former gang affiliation with the 'Gangster Disciples'.

Paula Oliver, his mother, worked as a hairdresser, and the family largely relied on welfare and food stamps.

The Pulitzer Prize winner, who also experienced homelessness, said: "You grow up inside these neighbourhoods and these communities, and you have friends, friends that you love, friends that you grew up with since elementary.

"And you have their trust, and you have their loyalty. So it brings influence.

"So no matter how much of a leader I thought I was, I was always under the influence, period.

"Most of the times, when they were involved in these acts of destruction, I was right there."

Admittedly, Kendrick has come a long way from Section 8 housing, by not only avoiding the wrong path but becoming the global superstar he is today.

The straight-A student went on to strike a music publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music, and his fourth mixtape, 'Overly Dedicated' in 2010, changed the trajectory of his career.

But it was his 2012 album 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D City', that definitely put him on the commercial stage, earning him several award nominations.

17 Grammys later, the rapper has never turned his back on his community, for all its faults.

Recalling the night he found himself screaming in agony in a hotel room, Kendrick said: "What was the feeling? The feeling was missing home.

"The feeling was, I should be with my family right now when they're going through hardships, with the loss of my dear friends that's constantly passing while I'm out on this road.

"The feeling was, 'How am I influencing so many people on this stage rather than influencing the ones that I have back home?'

"That's the feeling: being inside the hotel room, and these thoughts I'm just pondering back and forth while I look at the ceiling all night."

Kendrick will be performing at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and Apple Music has announced that fellow music star SZA will be making an appearance.

How do I watch Super Bowl LIX in the UK?

As mentioned, the Kansas City Chiefs will face Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday (9 February).

Kick-off will be 11:30pm (UK time) and coverage will start from 10pm and will finish at around 3:30am on Monday morning (10 February).

Brits can tune in to the game for free on ITV1 or ITVX, while Sky customers can watch the match on Sky Sports NFL and Sky Sports Main Event.
