If you've been trying to escape from some of the more relentless aspects of the real world by spending your time watching Netflix, then we have a show for you.

To say that some rather concerning things are happening over in the US is quite the understatement, so if you'd rather think about bad things that used to happen in America instead of what's going on now, you might like to watch American Primeval.

Check out the trailer below:

To give you the quick version, American Primeval is a new miniseries that just recently released on Netflix which goes back to the days of 1857 and the Mountain Meadows Massacre, where Mormons in Utah murdered at least 120 American migrants who were journeying to California to settle there.

This bloody page in US history has been given the Netflix treatment thanks to screenwriter Mark L. Smith, who penned the scripts for The Revenant (the movie that finally won Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar) and Twisters.

Meanwhile, directing the action is Peter Berg, who has the likes of Very Bad Things, Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor under his belt, and audiences have been loving what they've seen.

We say 'loving', many of them reacting to American Primeval seem to be quite shaken by what they've seen but still think the show is one hell of a viewing experience.

One viewer declared it to be 'the best show I've watched in a long time' and gave it a score of '9.5/10' for his verdict, while another said the miniseries 'caught me entirely off guard' and found it 'impossible to stop watching' despite some of the brutality on screen.

Another Netflix watcher declared the show to be a 'f**king masterclass from Peter Berg' and hailed American Primeval leading star Taylor Kitsch as 'the most underrated actor on the planet'.

In the show Kitsch plays mountain man Isaac Reed, who spends much of his time in the great outdoors trying to be a guide to a woman (Betty Gilpin) and her son (Preston Mota) as they attempt to make their way through this dangerous part of America.

Meanwhile, this part of the world has to content with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormons, and their leader Brigham Young (Kim Coates).

Those who've seen all of this going on praised the 'cinematography and action shots' of American Primeval as 'amazing'.

More good news for fans of the show is that it tells a complete story without a need for a second season, so anyone fretting over the threat of cancellation which hangs over so many Netflix series these days need not fear about getting invested in American Primeval.

Of course for those fans who are getting invested it's proving to be an impressive ride.

American Primeval is available to stream now on Netflix.
