Despite how many new series hit our screens, many of us still just go back to our old favourites.

Like sure, I could binge a new Netflix series people are cancelling plans for, or I could just rewatch Lost. Again.

There’s plenty of shows on streaming that we all end up choosing over new stuff, from the likes of Dexter to The Walking Dead.

But, it seems we could be focusing on those legendary ones and missing out on things that are apparently even better. Yep, like a zombie apocalypse series raved about by fans as ‘better than The Walking Dead’ with a big Rotten Tomatoes score.

Released on Netflix in April 2019, the American horror drama TV series is a spinoff of the Z Nation series.

Black Summer was created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and features Jaime King in the lead role. Set in the ‘dark, early days of a zombie apocalypse’ it follows Rose (King) who has been ‘torn from her daughter’ and takes on a ‘harrowing journey’ to find her.

She ends up in a small group of American refugees who are all trying to reunite with their loved ones.“But in order for Rose and her team to brave this hostile new world, they will need to make brutal decisions to contend with zombies – and each other,” the synopsis concludes.

Black Summer ran for two seasons on Netflix but in April 2023 Schaefer and Hyams stated it would not return for a third.

And still now fans are not happy about it.

When one user prompted fans on X to share ‘a cancelled TV show that needs to be brought back’, one wrote: “Black Summer deserved better!! Season 2 was amazing and I can’t believe there is no conclusion to that.”

On our Facebook group, Netflix Bangers, fans say the show ‘makes Walking Dead look like a sunny picnic in the park’ and it was the ‘best zombie type show’ of its time.

Some said they were ‘addicted’ to watching it as one wrote: “This deserved so much more!!! this zombie series and I’ve seen a lot of zombie series … had the absolute best cinematography in any zombie series! Felt so realistic and the characters the way they reacted to things. Forever will miss this show!”

Although some did say they found the show ‘hard to follow’, it boasts a decent 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.

You can watch Black Summer on Netflix now.
