Netflix won't receive a penny of the $25 million Stranger Things finale made at box office

The Strangers Things finale was watched in over 620 locations

Here's why Netflix won't receive a single penny from the Stranger Things 5 finale theatre showings, despite 'clearing well north of $25 million'.

Deadline reports that the streaming giant earned 'well north of $25 million... possibly even $30 million' in concessions from film theatres over its New Year's Eve and New Year's Day showings.

$15 million of that amount was generated by AMC Theatres from an attendance of 753,000, with concession vouchers costing $20 per seat.

"In addition to the countless millions of people who will enjoy Stranger Things on the Netflix streaming platform, in just two days, more than 753,000 Stranger Things fans flocked to an AMC Theatre to personally join in the celebration," Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment, said.

"AMC had slightly more than one-third of the total theatre count showing the Stranger Things series finale, and AMC estimates that more than half of all Stranger Things fans who saw the series finale in a movie theatre did so at an AMC."

But what does this mean for Netflix's profits on the finale being shown in theatres?

Because of the lack of guild clearances, traditional tickets could not be sold for the finale, and so a workaround was a concession voucher for a reserved seat.

And the reason why Netflix won't see any of that revenue from the movie theatre tickets is because theatres keep all of the concessions.

It comes after Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer said on Instagram two days before the finale that 1.1 million vouchers for the finale had been sold - more than KPop Demon Hunters at 700 million.

Netflix's Chairman explained that because 'consumer demand was so high', AMC had to add thousands more showings across its locations.

"In the end, AMC had more than nine times the available seating capacity allocated to Stranger Things than was originally envisioned," Aron said.

"The admissions price was free, but required the mandatory purchase of a $20 per-person food and beverage credit. As a result, AMC collected more than $15.0 million in just two days from Stranger Things showtimes."

There is hope that Netflix will commit to theatre showings in the future due to their acquisition of Warner Bros.

Aron promised that they were '100% committed to releasing Warner Bros. films in theatres with industry-standard windows'.

Following the announcement, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, said: “Our mission has always been to entertain the world.

“By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies—from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles like Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game, we'll be able to do that even better.

“Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling.”
