Tom Holland movie which has risen to the top of Netflix has divided the opinion of viewers

The movie hit cinemas earlier last year and got rather mixed reviews

Netflix has always had a knack for giving overlooked movies a surge in popularity when they're added to the site.

A 2014 Liam Neeson film dubbed 'Taken on ice' and a 2013 Mark Wahlberg Oscar-nominated war movie have both shot into the streamer's top ten, despite being largely forgotten about since their release.

But Netflix subscribers are showering more recent releases with love that went down like a lead balloon with critics when they were originally released, such as this 2022 Tom Holland action movie Uncharted.

The movie, which also stars Mark Wahlberg, is based on the video game franchise of the same name.

Directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, the action-adventure film also features Antonio Banderas and Sophia Ali.

Uncharted’s synopsis reads: “Street-smart treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his renegade mentor Sully set out on a dangerous adventure across the globe to find Magellan's lost gold.”

The flick was added to Netflix over the weekend (26 November) and the announcement of its arrival over on X definitely got a mixed response.

Plenty wrote they ‘loved this movie’ with others excited to ‘finally check it out’.

But there were others who slammed it a ‘terrible film’ and simply said: “It wasn’t a great film.”

One even put: “Nah, you’re alright… it’s sh**e.”

However, another was proud to say: “Idc what anyone says I like this movie a lot, I’ve watched it like five times.”

Uncharted was a pretty mixed bag with critics when it came out too, receiving varied reviews.

It’s only scored a mediocre 40 percent on the Rotten Tomato’s critics' score, with reviewers saying it ‘just doesn’t hit all the notes it desperately tries to’.

Esquire's Brady Landmann wrote: “If you squint hard enough, you'll see what makes Holland great—charm, charisma, aw-shucks levels of approachability—but none of it saves the flick from being utterly forgettable.”

While Concrete Playground's Sarah Ward said: “There's just enough that gleams here to be watchable. It's a film with a few shiny coins in its bag, rather than a whole bar, cavern or ship of riches.”

But despite many critics scoring it low, the film grossed a high $407.1 million worldwide, therefore becoming the sixth-highest-grossing video game film of all time.

Plus, in contrast to the critics' rating, Uncharted sits on a decent audience score of 90 percent.

Viewers write: “Such a fun and entertaining movie!! Tom Holland is as charming as ever and shows what a bonafide movie star he is.

"Loved the pacing and there's lots of great action, but the writing and plot could have been better.”

With another putting: “Not bad for a forgettable plot line.”

Well, you can make your own judgement as Uncharted is now available to watch on Netflix.
