Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has revealed when he expects the highly anticipated second series of Taboo to go into production.

Tom Hardy fans have had their patience put to the test when it comes to the BBC One drama, the first series of which was released all the way back in 2017.

With all the global events that have taken place since then, it feels like a lot longer than five years since Hardy last took on the role of James Delaney, but thankfully Knight has now suggested there's not too much longer to wait.

Speaking at Birmingham's Creative Cities Convention, Knight told fans he is set to meet this week with Hardy, who is also the show's co-creator, to discuss where the series will go next.

As for when things will actually get up and running, he said: "I imagine that it will start production towards the end of next year. [Tom and I] are both keen to continue and there are lots of people who want us to continue in that direction. It's been a question of schedules and deciding where it goes next."

Though it has been years since the first eight episodes of the series aired on BBC One, Hardy has stressed the second series is 'really, really important' to him.

In an interview with Esquire in 2021, the Venom star explained the second series has 'taken a lot of thinking', because he 'really enjoyed' the first one and wants to be 'really fulfilled' by the second.

The second series of taboo is expected to start in 2024.

He went on to reveal there are a number of different ways the new series could go, saying: "We’re still playing with ideas: you could go linear, a continuation of time, or we could drop prior to London, or we could quantum-leap through time! I don’t know whether to go orthodox – there’s a series of that already written – but I don’t know if that’s the right way to go.”

The first series of Taboo was set in 1814 and tells the story of James Delaney as he returned to London with 14 stolen diamonds in his possession after spending more than a decade in Africa.

Hopefully Hardy and Knight won't have to spend too long deciding where the series will go next, because Hardy made clear he has a lot of ideas as he suggested following the Delaney family to America, Canada, 'out in the jungle', forward to the 1960s or 'back to the 1800s'.

Only time will tell where the family will end up, but ideally not too much time!
