Wrestling superstar John Cena made his long-awaited return to the WWE last night, but it wasn't his performance that got people talking.

The heavyweight athlete has been away from the ring for a long time, instead taking time to focus on his acting career, filming several movies since he last appeared as part of the franchise.

So when it was announced last month that the Cena would be returning to Smackdown, fans were understandably excited by the prospect of seeing their hero again - but this time he was sporting a very different look to the one we are used to.

His return saw him team up with Becky Lynch to take on Andrade Almas and Zelina Vega, but rather than keeping it tidy with his regular buzz cut, he had let things grow out a bit.

Well, fans didn't exactly warm to the new look.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Fist thing i learned of 2019...john cena grew hair!?!"

Another added: "John Cena with hair is still weird sorry."

"John Cena's hair is ridiculous", a third said.

Speaking to Jimmy Fallon last year, Cena revealed the reason for the drastic change was because he had been filming a new movie with martial arts expert Jackie Chan.

The film, titled Project X, apparently called for the 16-time WWE champion to grow his hair much longer than usual.

He told the talk show host: "Now that we're all here, let's get into it. With the state of haircuts that are on television today, people are talking about mine?"

Cena sported a new look when he returned to Smackdown last night.

He added: "I had to grow it out for a role and I am trying my best to manage it, like they style it out differently on the set. They asked me to grow it out and I said no problem.

"I left for China, so the last time people saw me I had the traditional short crew cut and now I came back and this ball of wax that's on my head, so now everyone's like, 'Man, you ruined my childhood.'

"Or I came back and wrestled in Australia and it really was met with some heavy negativity."

Fallon then said that he likes it - to which Cena self-deprecatingly replied: "It's official, you are kind, and may be losing your sight."

Don't listen to the haters, John. It's a strong look.
