As Stranger Things series four is set for release, the cost of making each episode has been revealed – and it's staggering.

The iconic Netflix show is known for its incredible cast and creative direction, but do you know how much it costs to make per episode?

Spoiler, it's a ridiculous amount of money.

Sparing absolutely no expense, the streaming giant is said to be spending $30 million per episode of the hit series, the Wall Street Journal reports.

That means that the nine-episode season will cost around $270 million.

So, you know, a reasonable amount...

Still, Netflix's flagship show has a devoted fan base and the latest season is far larger in scope than those that came before it.

The season comes in two parts, with Volume 1 debuting on 27 May, and Volume 2 on 1 July.

The fourth season sees the return of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Will (Noah Schnapp).

Stranger Things look set for their most wild season yet.

We also see the return of Hopper (David Harbour), as the official Netflix synopsis reads: "It's not all good news for our 'American'; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human... and other."

The show's creators also weighed in with what fans could expect next, with Matt Duffer telling Deadline: "We kind of jokingly call it our Game of Thrones season because it’s so spread out, so I think that’s what’s unique or most unique about the season."

"I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins," he continued.

Matt and his brother Ross are at the helm of the series and they have big plans for the next instalment.

Adding: "So we have these three storylines, are all connected and kind of interwoven together, but it’s just very different tones."

And the scope of the series is certainly reflected by the run time, with Matt saying: "I don’t think we have an episode clocking in under an hour – even in season one there were episodes that were like 35 minutes. You kind of forget that.

"This season, they’re very long, so I think it’s almost double the length of any season. So that’s one reason it’s taken so long. It does have this sort of epic quality to it. It’s a different feel, for sure."

Stranger Things series 4 Volume 1 is coming to Netflix 27 May.
