Fans that have hit out at the season finale of season one of The Last Of Us, saying it lacked action and the presence of infected.

But showrunners have vowed that season two will pack a punch and will definitely feature more of those terrifying beasts that have the cordyceps virus pumping through their body.

Series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed during a virtual press conference that the next instalment will see 'a lot more infected' crop up throughout the story.

"Ultimately, we generally stressed the power of relationships and trying to find significance within moments of action," Mazin said, as per Variety.

"And so there may be less action than some people wanted because we couldn’t necessarily find significance for quite a bit of it, or [there was] concern that it would be repetitive.

He added: "After all, you’re not playing it, you’re watching it. And although a lot of people do like to watch gameplay, it needs to be a little more focused and purposeful when we’re putting it on TV."

As for the lack of action, Mazin said part of the game to TV adaptation process was trying to figure out how to transform source material built for gamers into television magic.

"A lot of the gameplay is centred on [non-playable characters] that you have to get around, avoid, stealth kill or just confront head on," Mazin said.

"The NPCs were either raiders, cannibalism... or the infected. So there’s a lot of fighting. I don’t know what your ultimate kill count is on a typical run of The Last of Us but it’s in the triple digits for sure.”

Druckmann added: "It’s much higher than we would want for the show."

He added that if an action scene 'doesn’t move the character [story forward], and it was only there for spectacle' then 'it was an easy cut for us'.

As an added bonus, showrunners revealed that the series will extend well beyond season two.

Mazin and Druckmann confirmed to GQ that the events of Part II of the video game will span more than one television season.

When asked if the hit HBO show's second season will make up the entire storyline of the second game, Mazin was clear.

"No. No way," he said. "It’s more than one season."

So hold onto your hats folks and strap in for some serious viewing, because it looks like we're in for a wild, long, and brilliant ride.
