Netflix’s dark new show The Watcher is leaving viewers feeling deeply unsettled - if you want a taster, you can check out the trailer here:

The Watcher landed on Thursday and has already proved to be a huge hit with fans - sailing into the most watched spot on the streaming platform.

The seven-parter, which stars Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, is made all the more scary by the fact it's based on a chilling true story making it the perfect watch in the run-up to Halloween.

The Watcher centres on couple Dean (Cannavale) and Nora (Watts) who move to their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey, with their two children.

However, shortly after arriving they begin to receive unnerving letters from someone calling themselves The Watcher who claims it is their duty to watch over the property.

The Watcher is based on a true story.

In one such letter, The Watcher writes: "Will the young blood play in the basement? Or are they too afraid to go down there alone. I would be very afraid if I were them.

“It is far away from the rest of the house. If you were upstairs you would never hear them scream.”

And the letters aren’t the only weird goings on in the house, which soon leaves the family scared for their lives.

But it’s not just the poor on-screen family who are feeling creeped out - because viewers who have already raced through the show have admitted to feeling freaked out after watching it alone.

Posting on Twitter one fan said: “Watching The Watcher as if I'm not home alone most nights and already constantly feel like someone's watching me.”

Another said: “I am terrified I’m currently watching The Watcher I'm also home alone too.”

A third added: “Just watched the The Watcher I am completely terrified of sleeping alone now.”

Someone else posted: “The Watcher on Netflix is a reason why I don’t want an overly big house lol.” For me it’s more the thought of the energy bills and the amount of cleaning, but I get your point.

While another person posted: I just scared the f**k outta myself watching The Watcher.” I think horror show reviews don’t come much stronger than that, to be honest.

But if you still need convincing, The Watcher has a solid rating of 7.1 on IMDB.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about, The Watcher is streaming on Netflix right now.
