Man left ‘fuming’ after working out why people kept flirting with him on cruise ship

Are you aware of this symbol's hidden meaning on cruise ships?

A man was left 'fuming' after realising his unfortunate choice in shirt was attracting a lot of attention while holidaying on a cruise ship.

Choosing to head on holiday on a cruise ship is a solid decision for a relaxing holiday, after all. Where else can you enjoy a place which has countless swimming pools and restaurants 10 steps from your door, while simultaneously being dazzled by views of the seven seas?

However, being on a cruise isn't the ideal holiday for everyone, especially if you're concerned about seasickness – or making the right impression to your fellow holidaymakers.

Unfortunately for one man, he made a pretty major faux pas while onboard a cruise ship, one which involved wearing a shirt covered in images of a certain food item which has a double entendre.

Sharing the moment on TikTok, user Ricky revealed that he was getting a lot of attention from people while sunbathing near the pool on a cruise.

It wasn't just stares either, with some people making comments under their breath whenever they walked past and one women even reaching out to grab his hand.

So, what was causing all of the sudden attention? Was it just Ricky's lucky day or was there something more at play?

Unfortunately for the Ricky, he'd decided to wear a shirt covered in pineapples that day – which anyone who's spent enough time on the internet will be aware that it is often considered a universal symbol for people interested in the swinging lifestyle.

Which suddenly explains all the unexpected attention, watch the clip below to see the moment Ricky clocked why so many people were looking at him:

While Ricky's partner appeared to see humour in the unfortunate mix-up, the final clip revealed he'd discarded the pineapple shirt, seemingly 'fuming' with the decision.

"We didn't know what the shirt meant," the couple added in the video's caption.

Why are pineapple's associated with swinging?

Most of us will have likely heard of the association between pineapples - particularly upside down pineapples - and an interest or openness to embrace the swingers lifestyle, but why are the two linked?

Traditionally a symbol of wealth, hospitality and prestige (via Indiana University of Pennsylvania), it's not exactly known when the exotic fruit gained a more NSFW meaning.

However, there's no denying that pineapples have become some kind of homing signal for swingers looking for other likeminded people. Which means if you really wanna anger your neighbours, chuck a pineapple on their porch.
