Tom Cruise’s latest flick Top Gun: Maverick has smashed yet another record. You can check out the trailer for it here:

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic has been hailed as better than the original by fans, with critics equally impressed.

Upon its release last month, it set a new record for Cruise, becoming the biggest box office opening of his lengthy career.

ComicBook reports the sequel to the 1986 movie has enjoyed an opening weekend of $124 million (£98m) in the US and a take of $248 million (£196m) at the worldwide box office.

Now, it’s been revealed that the movie is Cruise’s biggest film domestically - and could pull in a whopping $500 million (£415m) domestically and $1 billion (£831m) globally, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount Pictures

Not only that, but Top Gun: Maverick has also managed to surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness making it the highest grossing domestic film of 2022.

Top Gun: Maverick is set 36 years after the original Top Gun flick and centres on Captain Pete 'Maverick’ Mitchell (played by original cast member Cruise), who returns to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program - also known as Top Gun - where he is forced to confront his past as he trains up a group of new pilots, including the son of his late best friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

Alongside Cruise, the movie stars Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Jon Hamm. It also stars Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased pal Goose.

Fans have been bowled over by the sequel and have flocked to social media to pile on the praise.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “Top Gun: Maverick, easily this year's best movie so far.”

The actor appears in Top Gun: Maverick out on May 27.

Another wrote: “Top Gun: Maverick is by far the best movie of the year. This is how you do a sequel. Watch it in IMAX or the biggest screen possible and I promise you won’t regret it.”

While another posted: “Top Gun: Maverick is easily the best of all the legacy sequels. I give it a solid 9/10! Just go see it! What a fantastic film."

On IMDb, Top Gun: Maverick has an impressive 8.6 out of 10, while on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 97 percent critic score and a near perfect 99 percent audience rating.

If you fancy checking out for yourself, Top Gun: Maverick is screening in cinemas now.
