If you and your family have fallen victim to the occasional 'health kick' over lockdown, driven to jogging for fear of being bored to actual tears by this pandemic, then the challenge you've been waiting for is here - RTÉ's Ireland's Fittest Family is officially back for a ninth series later this year and applications are open now.

Back to put Irish families who dare put their name in the ring for the title are famed Wexford hurler Davy Fitzgerald, Olympic sprinter Derval O'Rourke, retired rugby union player Donncha O'Callaghan and, of course, retired camogie player and Dancing With The Stars runner up Anna Geary. The crew promise that this year's competition will be ramped up to be the toughest iteration ever.

Mairead Ronan is also back again to pick up hosting duties on the hugely popular competitive tournament. Last year's finale was watched by over half a million people so be prepared for all eyes to be on you and your nearest and dearest if you make it onto the show.

As usual, it's not just fame and glory that's up for grabs - the winning family walks away with the coveted title of 'Ireland's Fittest Family' but also a sweet €15,000 in cash. Not bad for an endeavour that may have begun with an Instagram jogging challenge in the first lockdown?

Naturally given the current Covid-19 pandemic, the production will follow HSE guidelines to ensure that strict social distancing and health and safety is adhered to throughout the competition by all crew and families taking part so no need for concern there.

There is some fine print on this opportunity - your team must be made up of four immediate family members, so your personal trainer cousin or GAA coach uncle are firmly out of the picture unfortunately. Every member of the team must also be over the age of 14, so no taking advantage of your pre-pubescent little brother's sudden growth spurt.

The new series will be filming from July to September this year so make sure your calendars are cleared - this shouldn't be too hard given the circumstances...

If you're looking around your kitchen table as you read this and reckon you and your family might have what it takes you can put your money where your mouth is by applying here.
