Fans watching the new season of American Horror Stories have been complaining about Cody Fern's 'horrible' Australian accent, saying it's the 'worst imitation' they've ever heard - completely unaware that he's actually an Aussie in real life. Uh, awkward.

Fern, 33, appeared in the eighth and ninth series of popular anthology show American Horror Story, in which he performed with an American accent.

However, for recent spin-off American Horror Stories, the Australian native was able to debut his real accent in the programme as he took on a park ranger called Stan Vogel.

But many viewers didn't seem convinced, with one tweeting: "What is this accent they made Cody Fern do lmao #AHStories AHS in the woods are the worst AHS."

Another said: "Bro what kind of accent is Cody Fern putting on cause he's all over the place lol."

A third wrote: "Now why did they give Cody Fern that accent," only to later correct themselves, saying: "Wait. He's Australian omg."

Many others also admitted they hadn't realised initially, but had the revelation after a quick Google.

Another said: "Not me hating Cody Fern's accent then googling him only to find out IT WAS REAL."

One other fan said: "Can we talk about the latest episode of #AmericanHorrorStories? Cody Fern opens his mouth to speak and my first thought is 'haha, what a dumb accent he's doing' before remembering he really is Australian. LOL."

Another confessed: "So I literally told @noplotjustvibes that Cody Fern's Aussie accent in AHStories was probably the worst imitation of an Aussie accent I've ever heard. They then proceeded to tell me that that's Cody's real accent...."

Fern - who is from Southern Cross in Western Australia - has since addressed the bizarre backlash, saying he's simply not used to speaking in his Aussie accent on screen and asking people to 'calm down'.

Speaking to TV Line, he said: "I'm not fairly comfortable acting in my accent. So it was very strange for me to use my own accent.

"I don't have Twitter, but I've seen feedback from people within the company who are sending me little tweets like, 'He should stick with his plain white-boy American accent' and, 'Who does this Harvard grad think he is trying to do an Australian accent? He's not Meryl Streep!'

"I'm like, 'You all need to calm down.'"

Fern also spoke to TV Line about the possibility of him returning to American Horror Story as other characters in the future.

He continued: "Never say never.

"I've been working on a couple of other things, so my time has been a little split. There was a three-day window for this episode that worked really well. And everything with Covid is so strange.

"But I love working with Ryan Murphy, I love his world.

"When Ryan picks up that phone and calls, it's very hard to resist, so we'll have to wait and see. I'd love to see what he cooks up for me."
