The next season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will the the show's final curtain call, one of the stars has confirmed.

Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Charles Boyle, told LADbible the writers had decided that 'all the stories had been told' after 153 episodes - which have mixed comedy with more serious social issues in recent years.

The next - and final series - will tackle the Black Lives Matter movement and police reform, against the backdrop of New York's most famous fictional precinct.

"We've dipped out toe in the water with more serious issues - Terry's racial profiling, Rosa's bisexuality, sexism - so it made it easier for us to have that conversation about Black Lives Matter.

"We've shown that we can do comedy, but we can also tackle those big social issues too."

Season 8 started shooting in December but has been put on hold due to the pandemic - but the cast, crew and writers wanted it to be a 'victory lap'.

"It was not unexpected," he said. NBC couldn't have been more supportive, but it was our decision.

"I'm going to miss the cast and crew. It will be a real gut punch."

Season 7 drops on Netflix in the UK on March 26, and Lo Truglio is also writing and directing his first film, Outpost - a horror indie starring his wife Beth Dover.

"I've been a huge horror fan since forever - it's about a PTSD sufferer who decides to take a solitary job at a lonely outpost in the mountains.

"Writing and directing is a part of my career I really want to explore - but I'll never give up acting I love it too much."
