A new documentary that pays tribute to Blockbuster will drop on Netflix on 15 March. Watch the trailer below:

The Last Blockbuster looks at - you guessed it - the last Blockbuster store, which is still going strong in Bend, Oregon.

It will delve into the pre-Netflix institution, which was actually given the chance to buy the streaming service in its early days for $50 million (£36m).

The movie features interviews with fans, employees and business people, as well as a nostalgic look back at the relic of a by-gone era.

For anyone not familiar with Blockbuster, it was like the real life, bricks and mortar version of Netflix, where people actually had to leave the house to get a film to watch (crazy, I know).

The Last Blockbuster

The official Facebook page reads: "A lot of people know that Blockbuster had the chance to buy Netflix early on and they passed on the opportunity.

"In an ironic twist of fate, our movie The Last Blockbuster is coming to Netflix one week from today.

"We are beyond excited for people to get to see this tribute to era of home video on the world's largest streaming service.

"Just don't forget to rewind it when you're done watching it and bring it back by noon on Wednesday."

For a while, there were two stores left in the world - one near Perth in Australia and another in the US.

After Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy back in 2010, the franchised stores have been slowly and sadly on the decline, with the last UK stores closing down in 2013.

The general manager of the second to last Blockbuster in the world says how they fought until the very end.

Speaking to the Australian Associated Press, co owner of the Perth store Lyn Borszeky said: "We put in a pretty good effort to be the last one in Australia, I suppose, but it was going to happen eventually and now is the time."

Since then, people all over the world have visited the Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon - with some coming from as far as London and Taiwan to drop in.

It was even available to book on Airbnb for a limited time in 2020.

Manager Sandi Harding explained she decided to put the store on Airbnb in response to 'uncertain times' for the business due to the pandemic.

She wrote: "Not much has changed at our store - not even our prices - and that's just how we like it!

"We think of ourselves as a family, and that includes everyone from the global travellers who come to visit, to the lifelong friends and couples who first met as Blockbuster employees.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has been a test of our community unlike any other, so we decided to list this stay to keep this tradition alive during these uncertain times."
