Filming for the second season of After Life has officially wrapped, Ricky Gervais announced on Twitter.

In the video Gervais posted alongside the announcement, he said to the camera: "That's a wrap on After Life 2!"

Everyone in the frame then let out a cheer, while Brandy the German Shepherd barked excitedly.

In the tweet, Gervais also thanked the crew and his fellow cast - giving a special shout out to his canine co-star.

He wrote: "Thanks to the best cast & crew in the world. Especially that dog. Good girl!"

The first season of After Life premiered on Netflix back in March, and an instant hit with viewers - who were soon drawn to Gervais's darkly comedic, poignant writing as we were introduced to Tony (Gervais), whose life is turned upside down following the death of his wife.

As the first instalment drew in praise across the board for combining Gervais's trademark dark humour and bad taste jokes with some genuinely considered and heartfelt takes on life, death and grief, Netflix then announced it had renewed the show for a second series.

Gervais recently took to Twitter to share some more behind-the-scenes shots, revealing that '70 percent of all takes are ruined by laughter'.

He added: "What a job."

Gervais previously admitted he's had ideas for season two in the bag for some time now, having said back in March he already had an idea what it would look like.

Speaking to reporters, he said: "I always do that just in case I die!

"Now I've thought about it, and I really would like to do a second series because I fell in love with the characters and I've got an idea of where it can go.

"The second series is always better. Usually because you know the actors.

"There's a little clue at the end of series one when he says, 'I'm just going to use my superpower for good'. He can still be an a**hole, and just enjoy it more."

He then updated his fans in May with a photograph showing that he'd finished the first draft of the script for season two.

Sharing the shot on Facebook, Gervais wrote: "Writing is hard. Rewriting is fun. Drinking wine when you've just finished a first draft is f***ing great."
