Ricky Gervais Is Starting Production On After Life Season Two Next Week

Ricky Gervais has confirmed that he will start making the second series of After Life next week, before beginning filming later on this year.

In a post on Instagram, the British comedian wrote: "I start preproduction on #AfterLife2 next week and film it in September and October.

"Then I'm bringing [his latest stand-up show] #SuperNature to Europe! Madrid, Paris, Berlin, and Prague to start with.

The show follows the exploits of Tony - played by Gervais - who drastically adapts his lifestyle following the sudden death of his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman).

The first series was critically acclaimed and saw Gervais celebrated for combining his trademark dark humour and bad taste jokes with some genuinely pretty considered and heartfelt takes on life, death, and grief.

After the runaway success of the first outing, it was confirmed pretty quickly that Netflix would allow Gervais to make up another season.

Back in March, Gervais confirmed that he'd already started offering up some ideas for what a second season would look like.

He said: "I always do that just in case I die!

"Now I've thought about it, and I really would like to do a second series because I fell in love with the characters and I've got an idea of where it can go.

"The second series is always better. Usually because you know the actors.

"There's a little clue at the end of series one when he says, 'I'm just going to use my superpower for good'. He can still be an a**hole, and just enjoy it more."

He then updated his fans in May with a photograph showing that he'd finished the first draft of the script for season two.

Sharing the shot on Facebook, Gervais wrote: "Writing is hard. Rewriting is fun. Drinking wine when you've just finished a first draft is f***ing great."

Speaking about the show's sometimes controversial and difficult subject matter, Gervais has also said: "I don't think suicide is the topic. I think the topic is grief, and grief makes you think lots of things. I don't think suicide is any more the topic than him getting drunk every night.

"I treat it respectfully. Everyone assumes comedy about something is disrespectful. So I've heard roundtables on radio shows discussing why Ricky Gervais shouldn't be making jokes about these subjects, and I'm like, 'Well you're talking about it, I'm just doing it in a funny way.'"

If you want to catch the first series before the second one arrives, you can still find it on Netflix.
