Gigantic Moving Gundam Robot Unveiled In Japan

Gigantic Moving Gundam Robot Unveiled In Japan

In 2020, is it the time for giant robots?

A life-size - which is to say, absolutely f***ing massive - Gundam robot that has been built in Japan is ready to be unveiled to the world for the first time.

OK, so it's not actually going to be properly unveiled for the first time, because it's been quite difficult to hide an absolutely gigantic model of a robot from the public. But you get the idea.

The 60 foot tall machine is designed to look like the robot RX-78-2, the original and best Gundam made famous by the anime Mobile Suit Gundam.

That 'mobile' is worth remembering, because it turns out that this thing can actually move. If you didn't know it was a model, you'd believe the entirety of Japan was actually being attacked by a humungous robot.

For those who aren't aware, a Gundam is a large robot that is controlled by humans in the popular Japanese science fiction series of films and television programmes that started in 1979.

So, it moves quite slowly, but it's actually a fairly remarkable feat that the folks over at The Gundam Factory in Yokohama have managed to get such a creation moving at all.

It honestly looks like this thing could be unleashed onto civilisation at very short notice, but the chances of that happening are pretty unlikely.

After all, robots would never turn on their human creators, would they?

The giant robot is reported to contain as many as 20 moving parts, and it weighs around 25 tonnes.

For those living in the vicinity of Yokohama, you might even be able to pay to go to see it - which will include a trip up to the observation deck - up close and personal.

It's due to open to visitors in December, but in this ridiculous and terrifying year, will that actually happen?

More to the point, in this ridiculous and terrifying year, do we really need to be creating gigantic moving robots at all? The risk is simply too large, guys.

Either way, if you do decide to pay a visit to the world's first - and probably only - 60 foot tall moving robot, you'll even be able to step inside a simulator version of it so that it can seem like you're actually controlling the beast for yourself, just like on the TV shows.

That's obviously awesome, but - again - let's just ask the question about whether you'd rather be anywhere near a huge 25-tonne robot.
