Iwan Rheon has spoken about the 'worst day of his career' when he filmed the rape scene with Sophie Turner for Game of Thrones.

Iwan's character, Ramsay Bolton, had just wed Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). On their wedding night, Bolton forced Theon Greyjoy (played by Alfie Allen) to watch as he raped his new wife.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the 35-year-old reflected on the filming and said: "That was horrible. Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody wants to do that, but if it's telling a story then you have to tell it truthfully.

"They didn't sensationalise it or anything. It was very, very hard watching. It's a horrible thing that happens, unfortunately, and it shouldn't be. It was the worst day of my career.

"Chopping someone's finger off you don't really see it, and when you're doing like a close up, it's a piece of plastic. We're just acting, it's not real.

"Then something like that where you're in the actual reality of the situation is very difficult to deal with. It was a horrible, horrible day."

He went on to add: "This is something that we shouldn't even have to worry about, because it's something that shouldn't exist in this world but unfortunately it does."

Back in 2017, Iwan revealed that he based the character on Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight.

Asked about his inspiration for his portrayal of the character, Iwan told the Independent: "Initially Heath Ledger's Joker, then I kind of thought Dennis the Menace.

"It's great to have that childlike glee in doing all these horrible things, and then Liam Gallagher's attitude and walk. But you forget all that stuff after a while."

Iwan also took the opportunity to say he was nothing like his character on the show. I mean, we can work that one out.

Despite this, Iwan's social worker mum still can't watch him in Game of Thrones. He explained: "She wouldn't really want to watch it.

"She finds it more difficult than fans to detach because no matter what costume I'm wearing, she still sees a little boy out there. She struggled with Misfits as well, she couldn't handle that everyone was being mean to Simon."
