James Gunn has confirmed that filming for upcoming superhero movie The Suicide Squad has wrapped.

Taking to Instagram, the 53-year-old filmmaker explained how the process has coincided with tragedy, as his dad passed away two weeks before filming and his dog passed away two weeks before filming finished.

But giving the post a positive twist, Gunn added: "It was a hard, hard time in my life and yet the most fulfilling time I've ever had making a movie.

"The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of this cast and crew inspired me every day. Thanks to everyone involved in this film, in every stage of development, in every department - I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for you all. You are why I make movies."

Back in September, the director and writer gave fans a sneak preview of the cast when he shared a picture of 24 names that had signed up for the film, which is a sequel of sorts to the similarly-titled 2016 movie Suicide Squad.

On the bill you'll find former WWE legend John Cena, Thor: Ragnarok co-star/director Taika Waititi, erstwhile Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi, Luther's Idris Elba and - of course - Harley Quinn herself: Margot Robbie.

No Will Smith on there this time though - reportedly that's down to scheduling conflicts, which is no surprise given that he's a busy dude these days - and Jared Leto's Joker won't be returning after his appearance in the first movie.

The list is rounded out by David Dasmalchian, Jai Courtney, Joaquin Cosio, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling NG, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Alica Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis and Michael Rooker.

Many fans took to Twitter to praise the casting of some massive names, showing their excitement to welcome the likes of John Cena, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion and Peter Capaldi to the fold.

One person tweeted: "This looks like the GREATEST DC MOVIE CAST EVER!"

Another fan said: "I never knew how badly I wanted to see a movie with both Nathan Fillion AND Peter Capaldi in it... until now."

And a third posted: "Taika Waititi and Nathan Fillion in the same movie? I expect much shenanigans."

Suicide Squad is due to hit screens in August 2021.
