Even though time is one of the few constants in life, it's sometimes hard to believe when things go so quickly or slowly.

Many are shocked to know that the legendary and iconic film Scary Movie has turned 20 years old.

Can you believe it's been two decades since it was released?

Star of the trilogy, Anna Faris, who played Cindy Campbell, has celebrated the massive milestone, writing on Twitter: "20 years ago I had no idea the killer was in the house. Happy anniversary Scary Movie!"

People flocked to the post to reminisce on the film and the three movies that followed with Anna.

One viewer wrote: "Your brilliant acting is one of the reasons for the everlasting success. You and Regina Hall are a powerful duo, we'd kill to see both of you in acting together again."

Another added: "My stepdad took my friend and I to see it. We were 15. He didn't know what it was about and was a little shocked. He was a trooper though and even took us to the sequel cause it was tradition. A very fond movie going memory."

The parody slasher flick was an instant hit with audiences around the world when it premiered on July 7, 2000.

It took the mick out of the popular horror films at the time, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream, Scream 2, The Sixth Sense, The Blair Witch Project, The Shining, The Matrix and The Usual Suspects.

It followed a bunch of high school friends who are bonded together when the car they were travelling in hit a pedestrian.

Not knowing what to do in a situation like that, they decided to roll the apparently undead victim into the ocean and vowed never to speak of it again. A year later, the people who were involved in the pact started hilariously dying and the hunt was on to find the killer.

Despite being a hit stoner film, critics panned it.

It scored a baffling 53 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus saying: "Critics say Scary Movie overloads on crudity and grossness to get its laughs."

Kim Newman from Sight and Sound wrote about the flick: "The air of desperation is emphasised by the insistence on padding out horror-movie gags with crude Farrelly-style humour."

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw added: "The Wayans brothers just want to make us laugh... And for the first 20 minutes, they do. After that the gag-rate plummets, and it's a long haul to the credits."

Sure, the movie wasn't going to win any Oscars, but it still stills in a special place of many viewers' hearts and minds.
