Across the course of his long and varied career, Nicolas Cage has played all manner of characters.

But just when you thought you'd seen it all, it looks like the actor is set to play none other than himself.

The Oscar-winning actor is in final negotiations to play a version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which has all but been acquired by Lionsgate, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication reports that the film will follow Cage as he desperately tries to land a role in a Tarantino movie amid a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. The 55-year-old also finds himself buried in debt in the film, and out of desperation, he agrees to make an appearance at a Mexican billionaire's birthday party.

At this point, the film will take a somewhat predictable turn, as Cage is informed by the CIA that the Mexican billionaire is a drug cartel kingpin who has taken a presidential nominee's daughter hostage. Cage is subsequently recruited by the CIA to gather intelligence, but this task is only complicated further when the billionaire invites around Cage's daughter and ex-wife for a big reconciliation.

Set against this plot, the film will also reference a number of Cage's other works, including Leaving Las Vegas, Face-Off and Gone in 60 Seconds.

The film was written by Tom Gormican - who is also attached to direct - and he reportedly sent the script along with a letter to Cage, explaining that the film was meant as a love letter to him, rather than a p**s take, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Evidently, the 55-year-old was won over.

So keep your eyes peeled folks for the most Nicolas Cagey film of all time.

Even off-screen and in cardboard form though, the actor seems to land himself in unrealistic dramas.

A few years back, police in Brighton stormed a house after receiving reports of a body that appeared to be hanging - but said body transpired to be a cardboard cut-out of Nicolas Cage.

Confirming the unusual incident, police said: "Officers attended a call in the early hours of Wednesday following a report that there appeared to be a person hanging.

"Upon entry to the property they did indeed find Nicholas Cage. Luckily no one else who was hurt or in danger."
