Rick Moranis is reportedly in 'early talks' to feature in Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot Shrunk, according to The DisInsider.

The Disney news site 'exclusively learned' that Moranis is in talks to come out of retirement to star in the film's reboot, reporting that he would reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski, a scientist who accidentally shrinks both his and his neighbours' kids.

In the original film, after Szalinski inadvertently reduces the children down to the size of a quarter of an inch, they get thrown out in with the rubbish and embark on an adventure through the back yard to return home - having to battle various oversized obstacles in the process.

Meanwhile, according to The DisInsider, the pitch for the reboot's plot is as follows: "Aware that the family ties have loosened over time but seemingly afraid to confront anyone directly.

"He has been tinkering alone in his attic for decades, dealing with the grief of losing his wife.

"When we first meet him, he has accidentally shrunk himself and is flying around on a shrunken drone - seemingly lost in a continuous of tinkering and experimenting that often puts himself and his family in jeopardy.

"He later reveals he shut himself away to try and invent a solution to help shrink Diane's cancer but found it hard to cope when he ran out of time. His guilt and shame is palpable.

"Through the crisis of the kids getting shrunk, the truth emerges and the bonds begin to redevelop between him and his kids."

However, before anyone gets too excited, let's just remind ourselves that this is entirely speculative at the moment, as there's been no official word on Moranis' involvement from either his camp or from Disney's.

The reboot itself, however, is much more of a legit thing at this stage, having been announced back in 2018.

Originally intended as a potential exclusive film for Disney+, Shrunk - as legacy-sequel to the original film trilogy has been named - is now set for theatrical release, having entered development last year.

According to The DisInsider, the film has no release date but is set to start shooting in spring of 2020 in Toronto or Atlanta.

Joe Johnston - who directed the first film of the franchise back in 1989 - has been confirmed to direct the new film, with Todd Rosenberg serving as screenwriter, using an original story by Josh Gad, Ryan Dixon, Ian Helfer, and Jay Reiss.
