Warner Bros has shared the trailer for The Witches, the forthcoming remake of the 1990 dark fantasy based on the children's book of the same name by Roald Dahl, ahead of its impending release.

In the trailer we get our first look at Anne Hathaway in action as the Grand High Witch, a role originally played by Anjelica Huston. Hathaway can be seen sporting a peroxide blonde bouffant and a terrifying grin.

Octavia Spencer also stars as the doting grandmother of a young orphaned boy portrayed by newcomer Jahzir Bruno, with comedian Chris Rock voicing his character as an adult.

We've also now got a glimpse of the marvellous Stanley Tucci - who previously featured alongside Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada - as he steps into the shoes of the hotel manager who unwittingly hosts the witches' convention.

The 'darkly humorous and heartwarming' storyline follows Bruno's character as he goes to live with his loving grandmother in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis.

As they encounter some 'deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches', the boy's grandmother wisely whisks him away to an opulent seaside resort.

However, as they arrive, they see they've accidentally planned their trip to coincide with a gathering of undercover witches from around the globe, led by the Grand High Witch, who is attempting to carry out her 'nefarious plans'.

Other names on the bill include Kristin Chenoweth and Codie-Lei Eastick, while Robert Zemeckis has been in the director's chair - drawing on such previous projects as The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol to bring the story bang up to date with the state-of-the-art visual effects he's become known for.

"Zemeckis's behind-the-scenes team includes his frequent collaborators, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (Forrest Gump), production designer Gary Freeman, editors Jeremiah O'Driscoll and Ryan Chan, Oscar-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (Allied, Lincoln), and Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (Polar Express, Forrest Gump)," a statement from Warner Bros said.

Warner Bros confirmed the film is landing exclusively on HBO Max on 22 October, for US viewers.

Sadly the streaming service currently isn't available outside of the US and a Warner Bros spokesperson told LADbible that a UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
