In the caption, the 45-year-old wrote: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.

"See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

One fan commented: "Well it's the last thing you expect to find when you go to work in the morning."

While a second added: "I can already picture the scene... Christmas night, back in your pjs, cold turkey sandwiches, crisps, dips and the theme tune drops."

Now, Alison Steadman, 77, who played Gavin’s mum Pam, has shared an update on her role.

As reported by The Sun, when she was asked about appearing on the last ever episode, she replied: "Yes!"

Steadman added: "I know it’s going to happen.

"I just haven’t seen the script – none of us has seen the script."

The veteran actor also revealed that Mick, played by Larry Lamb, has cleared his schedule for filming.

"As far as I know, yes," she said when asked if Lamb was going to appear.

"We only found out (it was happening) for definite the other day," the actor added.

For those unaware, the original three seasons aired from 2007 to 2010, following the lives of Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page) from Barry in Wales, who commit to a long-distance relationship.

Rob Brydon, who plays Stacey’s uncle Bryn, has since shared a picture of himself with Ted (Anthony O’Donnell) from an episode of the show involving a surprise barn dance.

“Ted! Have you heard? There’s going to be a new special!!!!,” Brydon said on Instagram.

“So pleased that this has now been announced, can’t wait to work with everyone again and see what’s in store for Bryn.”
