A producer from Top Gear finally revealed whether the show’s races were rigged or not.
In the process, the producer of the BBC show has also revealed that one famous race left Clarkson looking ‘visibly drunk’ delivering a piece to camera.
The iconic BBC show, most popular for its time with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May as the hosts, originally centred around the trio of motoring journalists doing reviews of cars.
Whilst this always stayed part of the show, what became most well-known was segments in which the trio would go on massive road-trips across the world.
In some of these they would end up racing various other modes of transport, seeing if a car could beat a bullet train, a cruise ferry, or even at one point a race ‘against God’ when they had Clarkson race an approaching sunset.
The first race saw an Aston Martin take on a high speed train to Monte Carlo (BBC) In these races, there would often appear to be a race to the finish concluding within mere minutes of each other, leading many to wonder how much were producers waiting around the corner for the car to catch up.
Speaking in a recent podcast appearance however, Richard Porter spoke about the races from the show. Porter worked as a script writer on the series and a consulting producer on the USA spin-off of the TV show.
He stated that, despite many believing the show’s races were staged, this wasn’t the case.
The hosts pointed out that editing always made them seem close, with Porter admitting that sometimes the races would be edited to make them seem closer than they were.
The very first big race in the show took place in the first episode of season four in which Clarkson, driving an Aston Martin DB9, took on Hammond and May travelling by high speed train.
Both raced to Monte Carlo, with Clarkson seeming to have just about won.
Speaking about this Porter said: “Clarkson got there quite a bit before because, if you watch the closing piece to camera where he’s leaning on the car outside a bar, I think he might have a glass of wine in his hand.
“He is, I think, visibly pissed… because he had been waiting ages, editing made it seem a bit closer.”
The Top Gear writer however stated that the follow-up race in which Clarkson raced in a Ferrari against Hammond and May on a passenger jet was totally unscripted.
This saw the trio racing to a ski resort with Clarkson overtaking them just mere hundreds of yards from the finishing point after travelling 650 miles, prompting May to throw his suitcase after the car speeding past.
Speaking about this Ported said: “He went past them in the street as they were running to the finish line, that was absolutely legit.
“I mean we couldn’t believe our luck.”
The answer that the races in Top Gear weren't scripted has, probably, saved the childhoods of many.
