A man has spoken out about how he finding out his sister was really his biological mum, and who he thought were his parents turned out to be his grandparents.
Scott Shearer appeared on ITV's This Morning this week after he was the focus of an episode of the TV show Long Lost Family, in which they tried to reunite him with his real sister who had been given up for adoption.
For the first 12 years of his life, Scott lived a normal British childhood, albeit with the acknowledgement that he knew he was a bit different to those around him.
Speaking on This Morning yesterday (20 January), he said that he grew up in a ‘normal busy hectic house’ but added: “You just know… I didn’t look like anyone else; there’s just something there.”
The man, who grew up in Aldershot, found out when he was 12 during an argument with one of his siblings that his parents Ted and Sylvia were really his grandparents.
Scott found out on Long Lost Family that they had found his older sister, Tina (ITV) His real mother was Ted and Sylvia's daughter named Pauline, who he had initially believed to have been his older sister. She ‘had some issues’ throughout her life, leading her to have her four children taken away.
She was just 16 when she was married and had his real older sister Tina. But when she was 19, she had an affair with a Nigerian man which is what resulted in her pregnancy with Scott.
She also gave birth to a set of twins.
Scott explained further, saying: “My eldest sister was actually my Mum… other adopted people know when you’re growing up you’re always going to bed and [thinking] ‘my real family is going to come and get me at some point’ and I was with my real family.
“It’s life changing and it’s not even that it’s ‘not true’ it’s just not true in the way you think its true.”
Despite Scott being the result of this affair and Tina and Pauline’s other twins being put up for adoption, he was kept by his maternal grandparents who decided to raise him.
Upon discovering his three older siblings he decided to reach out to them and, initially, all he was allowed to do was put a letter in their file.
Eventually, he found the twins via someone who he thought might be his dad and, whilst he wasn’t, he was in contact with his brother and sister.
In addition to this, he reunited with his birth mother Pauline in 1994.
However, the final puzzle piece was Tina, who he was unable to get in contact with.
But Long Lost Family were able to find her.
Scott burst into tears on being told he was going to be reunited with Tina (ITV) The pair are shown having an emotional reunion on Long Lost Family, with Scott saying: “It’s like all your Christmases coming early. You are my big sister.
“This is one of the best days of my life. Everyone is so excited you have been found. The most important thing is you were never forgotten. You were always in our thoughts. We have always loved you.
“You were missed. I am proud to have a big sister who is bubbly and funny and as beautiful as she is.
"It is like we were never apart.”
