A new BBC series has caused outrage, with viewers disgusted by what they've seen.

Based on the novels by late crime writer, Mo Hayder, Wolf first aired on Monday (31 July) and stars Game of Thrones villain Iwan Rheon.

Joining him in the cast are Ukweli Roach, Sacha Dhawan, Owen Teale, Sian Reese-Williams, Juliet Stevenson, and Annes Elwy.

The six-part series follows an unfortunate family that find itself the victims of a psychopath’s cruel games. So yeah, it's a cheery start, eh?

Describing the thriller, writer and creator Megan Gallagher said: "The tone of the series is at times heightened and absurd, with large doses of dark humour, which I think audiences will find really thrilling."

But it looks like it's all been a little too much for a lot of people who've seen it so far.

Taking to social media, there's been plenty who have said it's simply too grim.

Wolf has been slammed by viewers.

"What kind of sick minds think 'Wolf' on BBC 1 constitutes entertainment?" asked one viewer. "Those involved should be ashamed of plumbing a new disgusting low. I single out the following!"

Another said: "Watched one and a half episodes of 'Wolf', the new BBC drama series. It is the most horrid, cruel, repulsive, voyeuristic and dreadful piece of TV I've seen in a long time. Praised by the Guardian, who described it as a 'murder camp comedy', am I missing something?"

"I stuck it to the end but what a load of poorly plotted, poorly written, unmitigated crap," put a third. "What the f**k has happened to the BBC?"

But they're not the only ones to raise alarms over the series; it looks like the drama has seriously left its mark on those who've seen it so far.

Another Twitter user wrote: “Anyone been watching #Wolf on BBC? I can’t quite work out if it’s a comedy sketch or everyone’s just a bit weird?!”

Some viewers have been repulsed by the thriller.

Someone else complained: “#Wolf #bbc How do the bbc manage to get it so wrong so many times? What started as an intriguing, slightly dark drama quickly turned into a 'trying too hard to be darkly humorous' pile of crap. A very bad taste pile of crap actually. Trying. Too. Hard. To please everyone.”

“This is awful," another person wrote. "The writing has no respect for the audience, considering them consumers of any old guff.”

While one person said: “Wolf, BBC thriller series, is absolutely awful. It’s supposed to be shocking, & dramatic. It’s just a lot of contrived, drivel, so boring.”

However others defended the show, with one viewer confessing: “Am I crazy because I really liked Wolf???"

"Definitely will not be sleeping tonight after watching that," another fan said about the thriller.

All episodes of Wolf are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer... if it sounds like it's for you.
