The director of the first Twilight movie has opened up about the casting process.

Catherine Hardwicke recently looked back at Robert Pattinson's audition with Kristen Stewart for the 2008 film adaptation of the hit novel.

The British actor was trying out for the role of Edward Cullen, the vampire heartthrob who falls in love with Bella Swan.

Speaking on The Big Hit Show podcast, Hardwicke revealed that she had a few misgivings about Pattinson when he came into read, but admitted there was definite 'chemistry' between him and Stewart, which raised concerns.

She recalled that he got so into the kiss that he even fell off the bed.

"Rob and Kristen did the audition right here on the bed. They did the kissing scene and he fell off and landed right there on this floor," said Hardwicke.

The pair apparently shared a steamy kiss in the audition.

"He walked in and he had his hair was dyed black for some play, with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape.

"His shirt was just all messy, and I’m like, 'Oh, OK. OK, let’s see how this goes'."

She added: "Rob and Kristen auditioned on my bed, the kissing scene, Rob was so into it he fell off the bed. I’m like, ‘Dude, calm down'. And I’m in there filming with my little video camera, whatever."

However, while it might seem fairly innocuous, actors kiss all the time, Hardwicke said she was worried about the age difference between the two actors, with Pattinson being 21 at the time and Stewart only 17.

The director said she was worried about getting involved in 'illegal things'.

She said: "And at the end, Kristen was like, 'It has to be Rob', I could tell they had a lot of chemistry, and I’m like, 'Oh my God'. I thought, Kristen was 17. I don’t want to get in some illegal things.

"So I remember I told Rob, 'By the way, Kristen is 17. In our country, it’s illegal to have a sexual … 'And he’s like, 'Oh, OK, whatever...'."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Pattinson's latest release sees him take on another cinematic juggernaut, this time donning the cape and cowl in the upcoming movie The Batman.

The long-awaited superhero flick centres on Bruce Wayne going up against the Riddler, played by Paul Dano.

We've only had a few glimpses of the notorious Gotham villain in clips shared by Warner Bros, however, we have now had our first proper look at the character who will be terrorising the Caped Crusader.

The image shared by the movie studio shows The Riddler has a dark green, baggy jacket with a simple question mark on the side.

Paul Dano's character also has black gloves and pants and is capped off with an ominous, dark green face mask.

It's a humungous deviation from the version of the character seen in Batman Forever, in which Jim Carrey was dressed in a tight, bright green morph suit that was decorated with question marks. He also had bright red hair and a cane.

Matt Reeves' The Batman is expected to be a very dark retelling of the classic superhero and it looks like he wanted to make the villains extra creepy too.
