We’re all faced with the dilemma of what to do with our lives as we finish school. The choices can feel literally endless. But, for some, the search for a job isn’t just that – it's a search for something more.

For Carter, this search led him directly from high school into the Australian Army. Now, all these years later, he serves in the pivotal role of an Artillery Observer. Here, he gets to be part of a tight-knit team that work as the eyes and ears of the battlefield. His extensive training has now given him the skills required to master some of the world’s most advanced weapon systems.

His role is at the very heart of battlefield operations, where precision and coordination are paramount to the success of tactical engagements and the safety of ground forces. We spoke to Carter about his journey, and how it offers a unique insight into the intricate responsibilities and defining experiences that shape the lives of those who coordinate the Army's most powerful assets.

Carter's position as an Artillery Observer is far from your typical day job. It's a dynamic and high-stakes undertaking that requires exceptional situational awareness and quick decision-making.

As he describes it, "I lead a Joint Fires Team, coordinating indirect fire, aviation, and other support assets on the battlefield."

This means he is responsible for orchestrating the application of powerful resources — such as artillery, air support, and other essential assets — to aid ground troops. His role is to ensure these resources are delivered accurately and effectively when needed most, a task that directly impacts the outcome of engagements.

While Army life is structured and disciplined, it also offers moments of profound and rewarding personal challenges — exactly what he was looking for.

"I joined young, straight out of school, looking for a career that offered adventure, purpose, and challenge," Carter explains.

For Carter, one such experience stands out as his favourite memory, "Jumping out of a plane for the first time during my parachute qualification course."

He vividly describes this experience as "one of those moments that perfectly captured the challenge and adrenaline that comes with Army life – something I never imagined doing before I joined."

Personal growth and boundary-pushing are inherent in a military career, transforming individuals in ways they might never anticipate, and Carter is thankful for it all.

Of course, there’s life outside of the day-to-day duties and training, so Carter maintains a well-rounded and active lifestyle, demonstrating the importance of balance.

"Outside of work I enjoy running, going to the gym and generally staying active,” he says, all of which help him be at his very best.

"I also enjoy travelling and going out with my mates," he continues, proving he’s achieved the work/life balance all of us hope to.

Carter's journey is his own, but it does showcase the diverse experiences available within the Australian Army. His story is a testament to how a desire for adventure and purpose can lead to a career that not only offers significant responsibility and unique challenges, but also fosters personal development and unforgettable moments — and what more could you ask from a career?
