Winter has well and truly arrived in the UK, with the first snowfall and warnings of more arctic temperatures on the way.

As the cold weather kicks in, airing your laundry can become a lengthy process, taking days on end to dry in cold and damp conditions.

In a bid to cut down on energy bills, shoppers are turning to clothes airers instead of tumble dryers which can be expensive to run.

Top of our wish list? The bestselling dry:soon heated clothes airer is currently on offer on Amazon, down from £114.99 to £109.99.

With thousands of reviews, the dry:soon mini three-tier heated clothes airer is perfect for small spaces and designed to dry clothes quickly indoors regardless of the weather, and can hold up to two wash loads (15kg) at a time.

How much does the heated airer cost to run per hour?

Based on typical energy consumption figures from the Energy Saving Trust, a 200W heated airer like dry:soon's will cost roughly 6p per hour to run at Ofgem’s current average electricity price of 25.73p per kWh.

Tumble dryers, by contrast, use between 1000-3000W depending on the model, which works out at 26p to 77p per hour.

While heated airers typically need six to 10 hours to fully dry a load, tumble dryers finish the job in one to two hours.

In other words, the total cost per load usually falls between 40p and £1 for a tumble dryer, compared with around 50p for a heated airer.

In practice? Your tumble dryer will cost around twice to three times as much to run as a heated airer, rather than just a few pence more.

One thing for certain is that customers recommend investing in a cover for your heated airer to maximise drying time and saving.
