Five Guys explains why they leave ‘a sack worth of chips’ at the bottom of the bag

What’s a burger without fries? An incomplete meal to be honest.

The pair go together perfectly, two best friends. Two happy pals ready to be demolished by me.

And one of the go-to spots for a bangin burger and side of fries for many is of course Five Guys.

Those guys just get it. They know how to treat you right.

Including giving you an absolute mountain of fries in your order. If you’ve dined at Five Guys then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

When you order a portion, your crunchy golden sticks come in a paper cup inside a paper bag. But also in that paper bag is a load of extra chips just chilling loose.

No matter what size you order, you always get a ‘topper’ of fries added on, making that sea of potato at the bottom of the bag.

The burger restaurant previously shared a TikTok of how they make their fries, fascinating foodies – before explaining just why we get so many.

A sack of spuds are pushed through a potato cutter into cold water before being ‘manually agitated’ to remove starch and dirt.

Then they’re thrown into a mega bucket before being dumped into the frier multiple times.

After being salted, the chips are portioned into a cup and a topper – so that ‘extra’ amount you get are already measured out beforehand.

A user summed up their view of the process in the comments: “Cut potato, wash potato, fry potato, charge an arm and a leg then give the customer a whole sack worth of chips in the bottom of the bag.”

And Five Guys explained in response: “The ‘extra scoop’ of fries in the bag is our standard on top of the fry portion you already receive!”

Another user joked: “One bag of potatoes per customer.”

And one wrote: “What’s there more of, grains of sand on Earth or fries in a large fries from Five Guys?” to which the restaurant chain jokingly replied: “Very good question.”

According to Mashed, Five Guys have worked out that when we are loaded up with so many chips, we end up thinking we’ve got way more for our cash.

Alas, the extra fries have actually been factored into menu pricing, so Five Guys has basically David Blaine-d our arses.

Mashed also notes that Five Guys founder Jerry Murrell has previously spoken about why his chain dishes out extra scoops of fries, explaining: “People complain that they get too many fries. I just tell them to make hash browns with the leftovers.

"I teach my managers that if people aren't complaining, then you're not giving them enough."
