Air fryers were such a big trend at one point, weren't they? It was seen as cool to have one of the devices in your kitchen, purely because of how quickly it cooked things, and how it's a 'healthier' alternative.

They can be exactly that, as long as you don't scratch the non-stick surfaces.

You probably have one sitting at home too, and though they may not be as energy-efficient as we may think, they are probably the most convenient appliance in your cooking space.

Though it doesn't quite make us Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver, it definitely eases the process of preparing dinner after a long day at work, seen as all you have to do is season something and chuck it in there for half an hour.

But one aspect of air fryers has been going viral on social media lately, and it's nothing to do with its impact on your health, possible cost of your bills or even the food we stick in them.

It's something a lot simpler.

That's right, people have been having debates online about just why an air fryer is called, well, an air fryer.

One user posted on X saying: "Thinking about how AIR can FRY something??? It doesn’t make sense???"

Another asked: "Why is it called an Air Fryer?

"Isn’t it really just a mini oven? Fried food doesn’t actually fry in these things?"

Well random users, the answer is actually a lot more straightforward than you might think.

Firstly, it is true that air fryers don't technically 'fry'.

They actually cook the food that's in the basket by blowing hot air around it, with the force of the air producing a convection effect, browning the outside of the food.

Essentially, as long as the temperature of the air goes higher than 160°C, items such as frozen chicken tenders, french fries or potato waffles will turn brown and crispy on the outside, but soft and hot on the inside. Yum.

In terms of what you can, or should cook in an air fryer, it is advised that you stay clear of foods dripped in sauce or batter, as it creates an unholy mess that you'll have to clean up later.

Of course, if you're willing to do it all in the name of food, go forth.

But the main feature that makes the air fryer so loved is how well it reheats things and actually brings crispiness back.
