The UK is about to change the way you can dabble in a pinot forever.

There has always been an age-old problem when buying your favourite wine, and that’s the measurements.

This is because if you ever just want a tipple, the mini one-glass bottle sizes just aren’t enough, but the full-size bottles are far too much.

Well, thanks to some innovation in the wine industry, wine drinkers are being given more choice.

Introducing the new ‘pint’ size wine that’s about to hit the shelves in shops for the first time ever in 2024, thanks to new freedoms granted from leaving the European Union.

According to the Government, 900 British vineyards are going to benefit from this act which will see still and sparkling wine to be sold in measurements such as 200ml, 500ml and 568ml pint sizes in shops, bars and restaurants across the nation.

This news comes after the Department for Business and Trade announced today (27th December) that the new measurement system would offer more flexibility and choice for customers.

As part of the Government’s smarter regulation programme, they hope to ensure regulations are up to date and agile, while also helping to boost production and support British businesses along the way.

As per the new Government statement today, these reforms are said to ‘reduce burdensome regulations’ on alcoholic beverages as part of the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act 2023, which will increase business freedoms to sell alcohol in different manners.

The Minister for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business Kevin Hollinrake claimed that the move gives producers and consumers ‘innovation, freedom and choice’.

He explained: “Our exit from the EU was all about moments just like this, where we can seize new opportunities and provide a real boost to our great British wineries and further growing the economy.”

Nicola Bates, CEO of WineGB added: “We welcome the chance to be able to harmonise still and sparkling bottle sizes and we are happy to raise a glass to the greater choice that allows UK producers for domestic sales.”

No more boxes of wine for us, but maybe more hangovers.

These handy little measurements will allow the public to purchase wine in a variety of sizes to fit the occasion and mood, and as the industry already produces 12.2 million bottles per year, this legislation has a lot of businesses and wineries hoping to boost production and consumer demand for wine.

Not only will you be able to drink your fizz in a giant 568ml pint, but you can also glug a nice red at dinner too.

More options for gifting too!

So, if you’re a lover of all things made from grape, this is a pretty great thing to hear.
