Airport baggage handler warns against packing particular food ‘that will see your luggage removed’

You're really risking it in more than one way

An airport baggage handler has spoken out about what not to do when it comes to flying abroad and sending your belongings through security.

Because if you don't follow the advice set out by him, you might end up in serious bother - particularly when it comes to bringing food through.

Packing for a holiday can be quite the stressful experience as it is depending on where you are heading to and for how long. And depending on your plans, you might fancy taking some produce with you; something millions of people do.

There are obvious bits you can't take through airport security that most people are aware of, such as fresh produce or meat products.

But there's one other food you might not think could be a problem; and it is one that you might be more inclined to pack during the Christmas period.

Speaking to RSVP Live, Dublin Airport baggage handler John explained the issue in full.

He said: "Don’t ever pack marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives so your bag will be removed and you’ll be called from the plane for a bag search."

Marizpan is a common ingredient in cakes, with the sugary almond flavoured confectionery often being used as a layer between the filling and outer icing.

Not what you want or what the airport wants, with security issues concerning the threat of potential explosives a potential risk for everyone in the building. You don't want to be the cause of that.

On top of that, John said that your bags should not have a ribbon on your handle - something done by many people to identify your luggage, especially if plain in colour.

"Ribbons that people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall," he said.

"If the bag can’t be scanned automatically it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight."

On top of both of these issues, old stickers on your bag can cause problems for baggage handlers and security as it slows up the scanning process to make sure your bag is on its way to the right destination.

The old stickers wont scan as being active, so if you have multiple on your bag you could be slowing up the process significantly. Just imagine if everyone did this, it could cause absolute chaos.
