Why Are We So Angry At The Supposed ‘Lack Of Coverage’ Of The Lahore Terror Attack?

Interesting.

"60 people died and the media doesn't care. They go all out when it's Brussels, or Paris, but not when it's Lahore or Ankara. More proof that the media is Islamophobic... it doesn't care about Muslims."

That was one of nearly 50 similar messages on my Facebook feed last night, following news that a Pakistani faction linked to the Taliban had carried out an attack in Lahore's Iqbal Park, killing scores of people.

While evidence is still being obtained, the faction claimed it had been targeting Christians celebrating Easter, and threatened to carry out more attacks in the Punjab.

Back in Britain, speaking to a few people who wrote messages stating that the media 'did not care about Muslim deaths', the main response I heard was that they had not personally seen sufficient coverage of the attack - whether they were referring to enough space on the front page of a newspaper, or enough people talking about it on their Facebook timelines.

Among some, there is a clear sense that Muslim people are not being treated fairly in the public eye - but was there a lack of coverage of this terror attack?

Less than an hour after the attack was first reported, the majority of western national news organisations had published leader stories on the event online. Some digitally-savvy outlets had put out liveblogs, running overnight updates on the situation (admirably, in the face of a very uncooperative Pakistani government). And those with correspondents in the region - such as Reuters, Al Jazeera and The Guardian, produced reports straight from the ground.

Far from there being little media coverage, there was quite probably far more than there would have been at any point in the past.

So are we actually just angry that our mates aren't talking about it enough, that western media doesn't care about Muslims, or do we suspect Muslim people aren't being treated fairly in certain parts of the world right now?
