Every now and again a story like this does the rounds online and it melts my cold, icy heart a little bit.

Remember the sad grandpa who cooked all the burgers for his grandchildren and they never turned up?

Well, now a heartbreaking picture of an 18-year-old girl with autism celebrating her birthday alone has gone viral and it's all too much for me to handle.

Hallee Sorenson from Maine, US, invited a load of her friends and classmates to a bowling party in July last year. Heartbreakingly, no-one turned up.

Now, almost 12 months on, her cousin has shared the photo on Facebook in the hope that Hallee won't have to celebrate her 19th birthday alone.

"She is a person who just happens to have autism. She has never let that small detail define who she is as a person, which is why I refuse to use it as something to describe her," she wrote.

"Hallee sat at her party anxiously waiting for her friends to arrive so they could have fun....but Hallee's friends would never arrive. Not a single one.

"But you can help make this year's birthday incredible!

"I would love to flood her mailbox with birthday cards from all over! Hal loves getting mail - this would be the best birthday gift she could ask for.

"If you could find it in your heart to take a few mins out of your day and send her a card, I would be forever grateful."

Somebody pass me a damn pen!
