A biker was charged at and attacked by a bison, ripping her jeans from her legs, after she attempted to approach a calf:

The animal attacked the 54-year-old woman at Custer State Park in South Dakota on Wednesday (12 August) and was saved only because her pants came off and she fell to the ground.

It is believed that the unidentified woman was in the area for the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally when she got off one of the bikes and approached a calf to take a photograph.

As she did so, the adult bison charged at her, catching the woman's belt and jeans in its horn. She was flung around like a rag doll before being knocked unconscious as she hit the floor.

In an update on Facebook, Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley said that the lady had somehow escaped serious injury.

He said that the incident occurred at 6:39pm near mile marker 40 on Iron Mountain Road and was responded to by the Custer County Sheriff's Office, Custer State Park rangers, Custer Ambulance and Black Hills Life Flight.

Mechaley emphasised that visitors should stay in/on their vehicle and keep a safe distance from buffalo.

Mr Mechaley, warned: "We would like to remind everyone to not pet the fluffy cows - also known as Bison/Buffalo. We have had calls about the fluffy cows blocking the road occasionally - some people are also getting too close.

"Remember this is their park and we are the guests....please give them a break and keep your distance."

Taking to social media, there was little sympathy with the woman. One person wrote: "Ignorance is so bliss for many people people who feel entitled to overlook warning signs. I don't feel sorry and I hope she learns her lesson. I'm glad she's ok."

Another added: "I agree. Our last trip to SD people were getting out of their cars and trucks and trying to walk closer to the buffalo to take pics or even worse sneak up for pics. It must b a special kind of stupid."

A third wrote: "You can't fix stupid, and no amount of signage or warnings or enforcement will stop all the idiots. I just hope nothing has to be done to the bison, it was just reacting normally."
