Chunky Cat Abandoned By Owners Finds New Home

Lasagna was dumped at the shelter last week and needed new owners to help get her healthy again

A super-sized cat who was abandoned by her owner is now all set to go to a new home where she'll slim down to a healthy weight.

Adorable kitty Lasagna - named after cartoon cat Garfield's favourite meal - was dumped at ACCT Philly shelter last Sunday (20 September) where staff noticed that the poor cat was too big to even walk properly.

Snaps of the 13.6kg (30lb) cat were shared online with the shelter urging a potential owner to come forward after she was rejected by one would-be cat owner for being too big.

Sarah Barnett, director for development and communications at ACCT Philly, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania said: "A woman considered adopting Lasagna as she was here to adopt a cat but Lasagna was a lot larger than what she was looking for."

She explained: "We took in the cat, named her Lasagna, and our medical staff looked her over. She's very sweet and appears generally healthy, though her weight has made her stiff when she walks and also unable to properly groom herself.

"Obese cats can develop a lot of significant health issues, so she really needs a home where someone can help her loose the weight and be a healthy cat."

But now in an update on the ACCT Philly Facebook page, staff confirmed Lasagna is now headed to a new home with the Hammer family.

The update read: "LASAGNA HAS FOUND A HOME! Thank you to everyone who reached out about her and congratulations to the Hammer family. They are excited to help her become a healthy cat again with the help of their veterinarian who they've worked closely with after taking in quite a few rescue cats."

Sarah said the shelter was flooded with offers of support for Lasagna and is now hopeful that they might consider adopting another abandoned cat.

She said: "We hope everyone who was interested in Lasagna considers another cat who needs a home, there are so many and adult cats are often overlooked because they are stressed when in shelter environments."
