A dog abandoned in heart-breaking video has been adopted less than 24 hours after the clip went viral.

The video was recorded by Joy Dominguez who was running an errand at the time and caught the dog being left on the side of the road.

It shows a young man unleashing the husky, getting into the car without looking back, and driving away in Horizon City, Texas.

The dog immediately started running after the car, but the car did not stop or slow down for him.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office released a statement saying: "These crimes against our voiceless animal victims are taken seriously and we actively seek to hold suspects accountable for these cruel acts."

The husky was taken to the vet and was said to be healthy, so he was put up for adoption by an animal rescue group.

Good news for this pup, he had a new family within 24 hours who named him Nanook after the dog in the 1987 movie The Lost Boys.

Adopted by the Clappsaddle family, he is now 'running around and he's happy' according to the daughter.

The family said Nanook feels like the missing piece from their family.

Comments flooded in after the initial viral video with one person saying: "I have no tolerance for people that are cruel to animals. Take them out to the desert and dump them like they did to this poor little guy.

"Teared up seeing him run after them, wondering why they weren't taking him with them."

Another person said: "This happens more often than you could imagine. I grew up on a farm outside a major city and the number of animals that were dumped at the end of our driveway would make you very angry.

"Those poor loyal creatures just thrown out like garbage."

One comment stated that having a husky for a pet is not for everyone: "Everyone wants a husky until they realise how much maintenance they require. My husky is the smartest, sweetest, most obedient protector I've known.

"It's hard to take care of him. I make it work because he's my child and you don't give up on your children. We rescued him from the streets after a soldier abandoned him at a bar. He'll never be abandoned again."

El Paso County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating, and the suspects could face up to a year in county jail or a $4,000 fine.
