Gay Couple Adopt Dog Who Was Abandoned By Former Owners Because They Thought He Was Gay

'Oscar' has finally been adopted by a loving North Carolina couple, after he was surrendered to Stanly County Animal Shelter.

A gay couple has adopted a dog after it was dumped at a shelter by his previous owners because they thought the animal was also gay.

Yes, that happened, but the world can breathe again as the dog's new owner, Steve Nichols, confirmed to TMZ they have an LGBTQI+ friendly household.

Nichols adopted the pooch with his longtime partner, John, after hearing the heartbreaking story of the abandoned pup.

According to Nichols, the canine, called 'Fezco', was dumped at the Stanly County Animal Shelter after its previous owners found it humping a male dog.

This begs the question, have these people ever been around dogs before?

Nichols said that he was undeniably drawn to Fezco as he feels they have both faced discrimination in their lives, which prompted him and John to fill out an application to become his new parents.

They renamed the dog 'Oscar' once their application was approved in honour of the legendary writer Oscar Wilde, who was also gay.

Nichols also disclosed that the couple have been extremely hands-on with Oscar, as his previous owners didn't treat him well, and he suffered from heart worms.

Thankfully, Oscar is now in the safe arms of this loving North Carolina couple, so he can go forth and do whatever he likes.

In December of last year, it was reported by NewsNations Now there had been a surge in the number of people surrendering their pets to animal shelters.

Many Americans adopted pets during the lockdown; however, they suddenly found that they had no more time to care for their animals once they returned to work.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), about one in five households purchased a cat or dog during the pandemic.

But many smaller dog rescues were placed into larger shelters as they became overcrowded, unable to accept any more pet returns.

During a Morning in America interview, animal care coordinator at Fetching Tails Foundation Kristina Wos said: "A lot of these dogs I do feel really bad for when they are surrendered back to us.

"It is like a little bit of a tear-jerker, but I do hold it in."

Wos also added the number one piece of advice she gives to new owners when welcoming a new pet into their home.

"Being patient with them is the number one thing to take away from adopting," she said.

I'm not crying, you are!
